The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars.

December 27, 2012 when I intended to buy this book. I was at FullyBooked Regis Building with my boyfriend. It cost almost P700. Thinking about my future reimbursement from the office, I decided to get the book in January. So, I walked out of the store with a cute notepad and set of colored pens.

A week later, I went back to the same store but found no The Fault In Our Stars. So, I searched every bookstore- Eastwood, Gateway, SM North, Trinoma. They run out of stock early January. I was broken hearted. I bought a Nicholas Sparks instead (which is pretty good as well. Sucker for romance. Hahaha!) Waited. Patience, my dear fellas! Call it fate, destiny or whatever, dragged myself to Powerbooks one Saturday afternoon. And....they have one reserved book. Reserved for over a month now, but they never claimed it. I can imagine my eyes twinkle when the saleslady showed me the book. "Nung December pa po nireserve 'to pero di na bumalik yung babae." I paid as soon as the lady handed me the book. It costs P395.

This is a story of a girl with a lung cancer who met a fellow warrior. Hazel Grace met Augustus Waters in a social support group. She can barely breathe, his leg (and body) was eaten by cancer. They're two individuals fighting for life. They exchanged books. Hazel gave her favorite An Imperial Infliction and Augustus traded his Infinite Mayhem. An Imperial Infliction is a book ended midsentence (because the protagonist died while narrating the story). They both loved the An Imperial Infliction so much that they wanted to know how it ended. So, they both hunted the drunken writer and flew to Amsterdam together. Only to get disappointed. But it wasn't a bad trip afterall. At least they got to eat at Oranjee and taste the stars?

The other died and made a promise to write a sequel to the book written by an alcoholic loser. (No more spoiler. Sorry.)

It is a great book. I cried buckets while reading it. I know I told my boyfriend I didn't like the protagonist because she is so much of a brat when she's really not. Her personality is very honest. I didn't like her because she is like me. She tells the world what she means, in the most honest way she can. I hated her for being do much like myself. Readers, they like finishing a book. But it is as painful as letting someone go. I wish I was more if Augustus Waters.

Let me share you my favorites.

"You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she like hers."
"Some infinities are bigger than our infinities."

"The real heroes anyway aren't the people doing things; the real heroes are the people NOTICING things, paying attention."

"In the darkest days, the Lord puts the best people into your life."

Two young people battling cancer. They beat the disease by teaching people about finding infinities, getting better everyday. Our lives are own materpieces. Paint in colors, the best you can. When you're gone, bring it out. Show everyone what you've been painting all this time. Leave your mark.
